Vacation travel video about destination Malawi in Africa. Malawi is the unknown Africa in the south-east of the Continent. A wild country between sea and highlands, a land of contrasts with amazing green mountains and high plateaus but most of all, Lake Malawi. In the north west and on the border with Zambia is the thousand square kilometre Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, home to more than two hundred elephants who, in small groups, visit the Kazuni Safari Camp on their way to the lake. In the Lake Kazuni area there are many hippos and crocodiles which although rarely seen from the shore can certainly be heard at night. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. Small boats transport the local people to various loc...

Episode 7 In this episode Living Land looks at the development of aquaculture in South Africa. The commercial fisheries sector in South Africa employs about 45 000 people, and many more people depend on fisheries resources for food and income to meet their basic needs. However, sustainable harvesting and the recovery of severely depleted fish stocks is proving to be a big problem. As many commercial fish species have been severely overfished, aquaculture can now provide consistently stable supplies to meet the market demand. We visited two aquaculture operations in the Eastern Cape: one producing abalone, mainly for the export market, and the other one producing dusky kob (or kabeljou). The dusky kob farm forms part of Operation Phakisa, an initiative of the South African government tha...

“La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price. The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. For its adherents, it’s all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. They derive true joy fr...

In this critical episode Basil Davidson chronicles the European Division of Africa (Scramble for Africa) at the Berlin conference of 1884 in Graphic detail. The title is derived from King Leopold II of Belgium who declared his determination during the scramble for African territory to secure for himself a large a slice as possible of ‘this magnificent African cake’. Starting out on a West African shore where new European commercial interests had come to replace the old slaving ties. The films shows a variety of locations to examine the character and effects of the European colonial division of the African continent & the major destruction caused to the African peoples.

The Dark Side of Chocolate is a 2010 documentary film about the exploitation and slavetrading of African children to harvest chocolate still occurring nearly ten years after the cocoa industry pledged to end it. Cocoa plantations in Ghana and the Ivory Coast provide 80% of the world with chocolate, according to CorpWatch. Chocolate producers around the world have been pressured to "verify that their chocolate is not the product of child labor or slavery. In 2000, BBC aired Slavery: A Global Investigation which brought the issue of child labor in the cooca industry to light. In 2001, the Chocolate Manufacturers Association and its members signed a document that prohibited child trafficking and labor in the cocoa industry after 2008. Despite this effort, numerous children are still forced to...
